Wong Kar-Wai To Distribute A New Documentary About Composer Ennio Morricone

Yesterday, we sadly reported that acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar-wai had reached some stumbling blocks along the way to filming his upcoming series and film, both titled “Blossoms,” and that his Amazon series, “Tong Wars,” was officially shelved before it could hit production. This means that the wait for a new Wong project is getting extended. But luckily, it appears that his distribution house is still busy, as he’s purchased the rights to distribute a new documentary about acclaimed composer Ennio Morricone.

According to Deadline, Wong’s Block 2 Distribution has purchased the international rights to distribute the upcoming documentary “Ennio: The Maestro.” As the name suggests, the new documentary will showcase the composer’s private life, as well as stories from his long, storied Hollywood career, which has spanned decades. ‘Ennio’ is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore, who is probably best known for his collaborations with Morricone, including 1988’s “Cinema Paradiso.” Overall, Tornatore and Morricone have collaborated on 13 projects together over the years.

Not only is Wong now a distributor of the film, but the director is one of many artists interviewed for the feature-length documentary. Other interviewees include Bernardo Bertolucci, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, and Bruce Springsteen.

For those unaware of Morricone’s work, he’s probably most well-known for his projects with filmmaker Sergio Leone, including “A Fistful Of Dollars” and “The Good The Bad And The Ugly.” However, despite all of his legendary work, he only earned his first Oscar win back in 2016, as the composer on the Tarantino film, “The Hateful Eight.” Morricone now owns the record for the oldest person to ever win an Oscar.

No date has been set, but production on ‘Ennio’ is complete with a release later this year being eyed.
