There may be two more months of films yet to come, but that hasn’t stopped The New York Times from asking flat out: “Moonlight“: Is This the Year’s Best Movie? Barry Jenkins‘ first feature film in eight years has been met with the critical acclaim, and this weekend, that buzz turned into big office, with the drama scoring some massive limited release numbers, putting it on track to be one of the most successful arthouse releases of the year, and A24‘s best performing movie ever. But it’s been a long journey for Jenkins to get here.
Recently it was revealed that Jenkins had a number of gigs and a handful of projects that kept him busy over the years, including a pretty bonkers sounding Stevie Wonder movie. And in an interview with Indiewire, the director revealed for that particular project, Terence Nance and Solange Knowles were going to star.
“Terence was going to play a character loosely based on Madlib, and Solange played this free-thinking performance artist, and they both time-traveled back to 1972,” Jenkins said. “It was really, really dope.” However, it just never got off the ground.
But thankfully, Brad Pitt‘s Plan B had a dialogue going with the filmmaker and from that “Moonlight” bloomed. Below, you can checked a number of talks with Jenkins, the cast, and the producers about the must-see “Moonlight” and how Jenkins returned behind the camera.
“Moonlight” is now playing and opening in more cities in the weeks ahead.
