2009 Anticipated: What You Need To Know About 'Adam'

We’ve done some exhaustively compressive (if we do say so ourselves) Most Anticipated 2009 film features, but lots of other movies still interest us, What You Need To Know, will be an semi-regular feature with down and dirty info on upcoming 2009 films we’re looking forward to.

“Adam” – Fox Searchlight – Dir. Max Mayer
Synopsis: A boy meets girl story with a twist: boy has Asperger’s syndrome.
What You Need To Know: “Adam” debuted at Sundance last month to positive reviews and was snatched up almost immediately by Fox Searchlight (whose recent collection of successes alone should be enough to recommend this film). It also nabbed the Alfred P. Sloane prize, given to an independent feature film that integrates scientific issues into the work (previous winners include “Grizzly Man” and “Primer”), so it has that going for it. Hugh Dancy stars as the titular character, and is being described as “adorably quirky.” Rose Byrne plays his new neighbor who manages to get past awkwardness and start to fall in love with Adam. While the dramedy has the potential to be an average sticky sweet romance for indie twenty-somethings (tweee!), reviews suggest it may successfully navigate the fine line of sentimentality. Peter Gallagher and Amy Irving co-star as Byrne’s parents in Mayer’s second feature film (both as a director and screenwriter). If you want to get a feel for the film, you can check out three short clips of it here. One such example is below.
