Well, that's a wrap. The two bigger winners of the night were "Argo," which one the coveted Best Picture award and three awards total, and "Life of Pi," which took home the most statuettes of the evening including Best Director for Ang Lee (which we called in our predictions). The one relative "surprise" of the night early on (though a late groundswell started in recent weeks) was Christoph Waltz for "Django Unchained," beating out Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones. But the show was a brutally longwinded snore and the musical segments didn't help. Host Seth MacFarlane had mixed results, but fared better than we expected and had a few admittedly killer jokes. All and all though, pacing wise, it was a crushingly slow and laborious show. More analysis tomorrow, this thing tired us out. Your thoughts on the show? Sound off below.
EARLIER: After about six months of buzz, noise, gripes, campaigning, smearing and whatnot, the 85th Academy Awards are finally here. It's been a long and eventful season and one of the most interesting in recent years if only because the winners weren't locked up in advance like "The Artist" last year. In fact, it's been one of the most up and down, surprising seasons in an age. "Argo" took the buzz early on in Telluride, "Silver Linings Playbook" took the baton after that in Toronto when it won the coveted Audience Award and then "Zero Dark Thirty," "Lincoln" and "Life of Pi" entered the fray later in the fall and changed everything (remember when everyone thought "Les Misérables" would be the frontrunner after those reports of audiences crying and cheering?). But the "Argo" groundswell started to mount late in the game after director Ben Affleck was snubbed by the Academy during the nominations and the ground started moving under everyone's feet again.
Clearly, it's still a relatively open field in several categories with possible upsets arriving in Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. As Oli wrote in his final Oscar predictions (which I agree with for the most part), there's kind of four narratives of how the night could go, essentially 1) "Argo" 2), Weinstein/'Silver Linings' 3)"Lincoln" and 4) "Life of Pi." Meaning, anyone of these four films could dominate or at least take several key baubles. I personally think, while "Argo" is likely going to win Best Picture, we should all keep a close eye on 2) – meaning: never underestimate the Weinstein propaganda machine which could lead to some potential upsets.
