Best Original Score
Likely:
Nicholas Britell, “Moonlight”
James Newton Howard, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
Justin Hurwitz, “La La Land”
Mica Levi, “Jackie”
John Williams, “The BFG”
Possible:
Johann Johannsson, “Arrival”
Alan Silvestri, “Allied”
Marc Mancina, “Moana”
Hauschka, Dustin O’Halloran, “Lion”
Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, “Patriots Day”
Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams, Hans Zimmer, “Hidden Figures”
Lowdown: Frankly, the HFPA often pick more new school nominees than the Academy (Abel Korzeniowski for “W.E.” in 2011 for example). That’s likely good news for “Moonlight’s” Nicholas Britell and “Jackie’s” Mica Levi.
Best Original Song
Likely:
“Can’t Stop the Music” – “Trolls”
“City of Stars” – “La La Land”
“Drive It Like You Stole It” – “Sing Street”
“How Far I’ll Go” – “Moana”
“I See A Victory” – “Hidden Figures”
Possible:
“Angel By the Wings” – “The Eagle Huntress”
“Audition (The Fools Who Dream”) – “La La Land”
“Faith” – “Sing”
“Runnin’” – “Hidden Figures”
“Try Everything” – “Zootopia”
Lowdown: The question is how many nominations can “La La Land” or “Moana” garner here? The list of Globe nods with more than one song nominations includes “Anastasia,” “The Lion King,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” It’s only happened once this century though (“Burlesque”).
Best Animated Feature Film
Likely:
“Finding Dory”
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Moana”
“The Red Turtle”
“Zootopia”
Possible:
“The Little Prince”
“Sing”
“Trolls”
Lowdown: Like the Animated Oscar category this one is potentially too close to call. The HFPA tends to gravitate toward studio films, but have nominated Sony Classics’ films in the past. That means “Red Turtle” is on the bubble. It’s saving grace may be that a good chunk of the membership went to Cannes where it earned raves.
The 74th Golden Globe Awards will announce their nominations on Monday, Dec. 12. The winners will be announced Sunday, Jan. 8 on NBC.
