Anything is possible. That’s the takeaway after “Parasite” became the first non-English language film to win the Ensemble Cast for a Motion Picture honor at the 2020 SAG Awards. Bong Joon Ho’s Palme d’Or winner shocked by overcoming competition from other Best Picture nominees “The Irishman,” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and “Jojo Rabbit” to take home the Screen Actors Guild’s highest honor. Along with PGA Award winner “1917,” which earned no SAG nominations, its arguably now a co-front runner for Best Picture with final voting set to begin in less than two weeks. On the other hand, the other film winners were much less surprising.
“Once Upon A Time’s” Brad Pitt took Supporting Actor, “Marriage Story’s” Laura Dern won Supporting Actress, “Joker’s” Joaquin Phoenix took Lead Actor and “Judy” herself, Renee Zellweger, won Lead Actress.
On the television side, things were much more intriguing. While Phoebe Waller-Bridge won Lead Actress in a Comedy for “Fleabag,” it was “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” surprising in Comedy Ensemble. Jennifer Aniston shocked willing Lead Actress in a Drama for “The Morning Show,” a huge win for Apple TV+, but “The Crown” surprised in Drama Ensemble.
Before the ceremony “Avengers: Endgame” and “Game of Thrones” took the SAG Awards honors in the Stunt Ensemble categories for film and television respectively.
