Does an awards show exist in a vacuum? If there is no telecast to showcase it does it matter? If studios and networks are expected to ignore it is it even worthy of anyone’s attention? Those are just some of the questions facing the 2022 Golden Globes. An awards show or ceremony (we’ll see) that no one was expecting after personal publicists and the industry as a whole demanded changes from its governing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, this spring and summer.

The HFPA has said they have made major reforms to their organization including policies on gifts, a more diverse membership, and incorporating a more corporate structure to oversee the millions they have earned from NBC for broadcast rights every year. That being said, NBC “canceled” this year’s telecast in order to give some breathing room for all involved. For better or worse, the HFPA had no intention of breaking their 78-year-old tradition even if many studios and networks did not provide screeners or in-person screening invites over the past eight months. Hence, the announcement of the 2022 Golden Globe Awards nominees today.
