Between awards season and our current political season, you’d be forgiven if you forgot “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the J.K. Rowling-penned spin-off to her popular “Harry Potter” film franchise, is merely a few weeks away. Warner Bros.’ attempt to revitalize one of their most popular properties, which will supposedly ignite a five film series, remains a huge question mark. It’s unclear how fans will respond to these new characters and different backdrops seen in this forthcoming prequel, but if these four newly-released clips are any indication, it likely won’t veer too far away from what we’ve come to expect from this wizardry world.
The first clip follows our brand new lead Newt Schmander (Eddie Redmayne), a magizoologist kicked out of Hogwarts capturing strange and exotic beasts (hence, the title) throughout 1920 New York City, dealing with Niffler, a platypus-esque money-muncher and one of the multiple aforementioned fantastic beasts. The second clip, finds Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) summoning magic of the culinary delight as she bakes a treat with her wand for Newt and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), his mustached companion. The third finds Newt showing more of the magical world, while the last sees him trying to cover up a mess.
None are particularly eye-opening reveals, but they’ll help ease moviegoers back to the wondrous cinematic world left behind after 2011’s capper “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.” Some things never change, however, as the filmmaker behind that previous “Harry Potter” film and the three before it, David Yates, returns to direct. Whether or not “The Legend of Tarzan” helmer brings the magic of Rowling’s series back to the big screen remains a mystery, one that’ll have to be solved on November 18th.
