We gotta say, the concept for this is pretty clever. While studios are bending over backward to try and find popular video games to turn into movies (see the recent movement on "Need For Speed"), the folks over at Disney are celebrating the medium itself with their forthcoming "Wreck-It-Ralph."
The film is clever journey down the rabbit hole of the medium, centering on an '80s videogame villain named Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) who is tired of being the bad-guy against the squeaky clean Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer), so he decides to try his hand at being the hero of another game in the arcade. He hops from game to game, trying his hand at heroics, until he unintentionally unleashes a larger threat that could destroy all of the games. This allows for a host of iconic characters to cameo in the film with Bowser from "Super Mario Bros," a ghost from "Pac-Man," Doctor Robotnik from "Sonic the Hedgehog," Kano from "Mortal Kombat," and Coily the Snake from "Q*bert" all slated to appear in the movie that will also pay homage to games like "Halo" and "Mario Kart." Sounds like geek heaven.
Four new images from the film have landed online giving a pretty nice peek into the candy-colored world Disney is putting together for this one. Yep, those are unemployed characters from "Q*Bert" you see in the image at Grand Central Power Strip (ha) and that's Sargaent Calhoun (voiced by Jane Lynch) in the first person shooter pic. As for the little girl, that's Vanellope von Schweetz played by Sarah Silverman, who features in the game "Sugar Rush." We have to say, it looks impressive thus far.
In related news, last summer at D23 a Wreck-It-Ralph tie-in arcade game was unveiled and some footage from the gameplay has wandered online. Apparently this will be something you can actually play with director Rich Moore saying it will pop up across the country. "Wreck-It-Ralph" opens on November 2nd. [First Showing/Bleeding Cool]
