74th Golden Globes Nods Analysis: 'La La Land,' 'Moonlight,' 'Westworld' Dominate Along With A Ton Of Surprises - Page 2 of 2

Best TV Series, Drama
“The Crown”
“Game Of Thrones”
“Stranger Things”
“This Is Us”
“Westworld”

Analysis: Mr. Robot,” “Empire” and “Outlander” are pushed out for four newcomers (last year’s nominee “Narcos” was not eligible).  “Better Call Saul” and “The Americans” should be in this mix, but its going to be quite a nail biter to see who wins this one.

Best TV Series, Comedy/Musical
“Atlanta”
“Blackish”
“Mozart in the Jungle”
“Transparent”
“Veep”

Analysis: Boy, the HFPA really love “Mozart” don’t they?  Hard to argue with the rest of this field although “Silicon Valley,” obviously, should have made the cut.

Best TV Miniseries or Movie
“American Crime”
“The Dresser”
“The Night Manager”
“The Night Of”
“The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”

Analysis:  These all look familiar don’t they? “Confirmation” is probably the only slight snub here.  Expect a big night for “People vs. O.J.” as it will all start to feel like Emmy deja vu.

Best Actress, Comedy Series
Rachel Bloom, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”
Sarah Jessica Parker, “Divorce”
Issa Rae, “Insecure”
Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin”
Tracee Ellis Ross, “Blackish”

Analysis: These are stellar nominees and Rae’s inclusion is spot on. Not a huge fan of the childhood memory triggering “Divorce” and not sure Parker’s performance is that awards worthy, but hard to quibble here overall.

Best Actor, TV Comedy
Anthony Anderson, “Black-ish”
Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart In The Jungle”
Donald Glover, “Atlanta”
Nick Nolte, “Graves”
Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent”

Analysis: Haven’t seen “Graves,” but Nolte’s inclusion over “Silicon Valley‘s” Thomas Middleditch or “Last Man on Earth‘s” Will Forte seems… questionable? History will show though that this is always a sketchy category for the HFPA.

Best Actor, TV Drama
Rami Malek, “Mr Robot”
Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”
Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”
Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan”
Billy Bob Thornton, “Goliath”

Analysis: HFPA pick Thornton over this year’s Emmy nominee “House of Cards‘” Kevin Spacey. Not sure many TV critics would argue with that.

Best Actress, TV Drama
Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”
Claire Foy, “The Crown”
Keri Russell, “The Americans”
Winona Ryder, “Stranger Things”
Evan Rachel Wood, “Westworld”

Analysis: Three newcomers as last year’s winner “Empire’s” Taraji P. Henson, “How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis and “House of Card’s” Robin Wright are deemed no longer worthy.  Viewers may be happy to see Ryder and Wood in the mix though.

Best Supporting Actor
Sterling K. Brown, “The People vs. O.J. Simpson”
Hugh Laurie, “The Night Manager”
John Lithgow, “The Crown”
Christian Slater, “Mr. Robot”
John Travolta, “The People vs. O.J. Simpson”

Analysis: This category is simply too broad, but hard to argue with any of these nominees. A tough, tough field.

Best Supporting Actress
Olivia Colman, “The Night Manager”
Lena Headey, “Game of Thrones”
Chrissy Metz, “This Is Us”
Mandy Moore, “This Is Us”
Thandie Newton, “Westworld”

Analysis: Boy, the HFPA loved it some “This Is Us” didn’t they? Happy with Newton’s inclusion who could be the surprise winner here as most of the film-centric members have likely seen “Westworld” over NBC’s critical hit.

Best Actor, Mini-Series or TV Movie
Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of”
Bryan Cranston, “All the Way”
Tom Hiddleston, “The Night Manager”
John Turturro, “The Night Of”
Courtney B. Vance, “The People vs. O.J. Simpson”

Analysis: Another great set of nominees. Vance should repeat his Emmy win here, however.

Best Actress, Mini-Series or TV Movie
Felicity Huffman, “American Crime”
Riley Keough, “The Girlfriend Experience”
Sarah Paulson, “The People vs. O.J. Simpson”
Charlotte Rampling, “London Spy”
Kerry Washington, “Confirmation”

Analysis: The HFPA bypassed Emmy nominees Felicity Huffman and Lily Taylor from “American Crime” (the latter more troubling than the former), but these are still all superb performances. Obviously, Paulson takes this in a walk.

The 74th Golden Globes will be handed out Jan. 8 at 5 PM PT, 8 PM ET on NBC.
