We’ve had our eye on Matt Spicer for a while now, as it seems he’s just on the cusp of breaking out. The writer/director is a frequent collaborator with Max Winkler (“Ceremony“), co-writing “The Ornate Anatomy of Living Things” and “The Adventurer’s Handbook” with him which are in development, while their latest effort, the period comedy “The Coward,” is set to be Winkler’s next directorial effort. But Spicer is now branching out behind the camera, and the results of his first effort are here.
His debut short, “It’s Not You It’s Me” premiered at the recent 2013 SXSW Film Festival, and focuses a young woman’s relationship with her boyfriend that takes a dark turn when every sound he makes starts to annoy her. “Community” star Gillian Jacobs features along with Fran Kranz from “Cabin In The Woods” and funny man Rob Huebel.
EW released a clip of the film last week, and today, we’ve got a few exclusives from the film including photos, the poster and two of the short’s soundtrack songs. Eric D. Johnson of the Fruit Bats (he also scored “Ceremony”) and his friend Richard Swift recorded original music specifically for the film. They call themselves The Maliblue Moons and the songs have never been heard outside the recent SXSW premiere.
“It’s Not You It’s Me” was shot in three days in Spicer’s own Los Angeles living room apartment on the sly. “I didn’t tell my landlord,” the 28-year-old first-time director told EW, “and we’re spraying blood everywhere, smashing tables. Of course my landlady showed up halfway through and freaked out and threatened to shut us down.” No word on when the short will be released, but plans are in the works. Check it all out below.
