"Since When Is A Plot Spoiler A Scoop?": James Gunn Denies 'Guardians 2' Rumor, Questions Spoiler Culture

Guardians Of The GalaxyA few months back, I wrote a piece titled, If You Love Movies, Why Ruin Them? When Spoilers Go Too Far that examined the growing trend of plot reveals in blockbuster movies in movie reporting. "Being able to say you were first on the beat to reveal a certain detail often feels like the primary motivation, with any thought toward the reasoning of why the information should be disseminated. Rather, because it can, seems to be enough for many," I observed at the time about the often vague reasoning given to justify spoiler stories. Now, in the wake of another big rumor, director James Gunn has some out with some questions of his own about what fans really want to know before a movie opens.

Earlier today, Heroic Hollywood reported with great fanfare, their four-sources-approved details about Peter Quill’s parents in "Guardians Of The Galaxy 2." Gunn quickly denied the reports, but went on to wonder about the nature of this kind of journalism. Here’s an excerpt of what he posted on Facebook:

I get the desire to get “scoops” on character inclusion and casting choices, etc. But since when is a plot spoiler a “scoop”? Is this really what fandom wants to know? Plot details in movies ahead of time? I got in this business because I love movies, and I think most film journalists are the same way. And spoiling plot details doesn’t add to the enjoyment of the film-going experience. So bravo to those folks out there who don’t partake in this sort of thing.

That’s certainly a question not enough people are asking themselves and indeed, while we strive to get it right, we don’t always do. But as an audience, do you want to know every move of  a Marvel blockbuster before you sit down at the multiplex? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section. Gunn’s full post below.

All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,…
