Is 'Watchmen' In Trouble? Judge Refuses To Dismiss 20 Century Fox Rights Lawsuit

Uh oh. Problems for Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” film? Nikki Finke writes. “A federal judge has denied a Warner Bros motion to dismiss 20th Century Fox’s legal battle over the rights to develop, produce and distribute a film based on the graphic novel.”

Apparently this is a big deal and it sounds like it, but we weren’t following “Watchmen” closely earlier this year when 20th Century Fox filed for copy infringement and breach of contract against WB over rights to the Alan Moore-penned graphic novel.

Finke says this could fuck shit up for Snyder’s “Watchmen” from a legal/momentary stand-point. “This is indeed a stunning development which could imperil Warner Bros’ entire 2009 movie slate. Sources point out to me that Warner Bros had a similar problem with the “Dukes Of Hazzard” movie before Judge Feess and had to pay tens of millions of dollars to release the film.”

Right now, somewhere in the U.K. Alan Moore –who loathes WB and any film adaptation of his work – is levitating a tea cup and smiling a devilish smile.

Meanwhile, in a scene that sounds like it won’t see the light of day in its true from (we’re still not convinced ‘Watchmen’ is going to get away with an R-Rating), Carla Gugino, who plays Sally Jupiter, says her rape scene in the movie she shot was “brutal.” “That was one of the things [director] Zack [Snyder] said to me from the start: ‘I really want this to be incredibly brutal. It’s not a turn-on kind of story. It’s bad.’ It’s important that we did that. I think hopefully it will be really powerful.”

Too much is riding on this one and we can’t see Warners being down with that, but we’ve been wrong in the past. Lastly, some of the footage shown at Comic-Con has leaked ont YouTube, but the quality is really poor. One contains an inexplicable Rickroll right in the middle of it all. Someone will still watch it.
