About three weeks away from its slated December 18th release date in China, Wong Kar-Wai has gone ahead and pulled a Wong Kar-Wai, and once again "The Grandmaster" is delayed.
Twitch reports that the film is now being slated for a January 8, 2013 release in Hong Kong and China, but one wonders if that date too will hold. According to various rumors, Wong Kar-Wai is shooting more footage for the picture, which since day one has been through an on-again, off-again production process. In fact, he was still shooting as recently as July, so perhaps expecting him to have finished the movie by now was a bit of wishful thinking. That said, with a new full length trailer, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and new images, it at least seems the movie is as close as ever to crossing the finish line.
Certainly, Wong Kar-Wai has other commitments he needs to attend to in 2013 as well, so he'll need to wrap this up eventually. As you might recall, he's been named jury president for the Berlin Film Festival in February, so maybe it is just final touch-ups he's working on. But at this point, nothing would surprise us.
