First Official Images From Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' Provide Some Good Costume Ideas For New Year's Eve

Well, they're here folks! The first two images that Warner Bros. (courtesy of Sassisam, via The Film Stage) has chosen to release from Baz Luhrmann's splashy and expensive take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's required reading list staple "The Great Gatsby" and, well, they look like an adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," albeit one with a pretty enticing cast.

While we'd already gotten some spy camera-y looks at Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire (as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, respectively), this is our first official look at the cast together, with DiCaprio and Maguire joined by Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, all of them in period finery, sitting around a table. Just think about how much depth that table will have when it's in 3D! Those looking for some kind of wild, kinetic, Luhrmann-esque reimagining will be disappointed – this looks like a fairly straightforward adaptation. No crazy colors or drag queen-worthy costumes here, sadly, but they're certainly as lush as you might expect from Luhrmann and the material.

The second photo shows DiCaprio holding Mulligan, and the pair certainly look the part, exquisitely so. While eyebrows were raised about some of the casting, everyone's looking convincing, and fingers crossed they can pull off the acting side of it too — there's more than enough acclaimed performances and awards nominations around this table to hold out hope for that.

"The Great Gatsby" doesn't even open until Christmas Day, 2012 (when another DiCpario joint, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," drops), so chances are we'll be bombarded in the coming months with more photos, trailers, posters, and whatever else they can cook up to sell this $100 million+ 3D literary adaptation.
