Lawrence Kasdan’s ‘Darling Companion’ & Dakota Fanning Vehicle ‘Now Is Good’ Find Homes
Until “Zoolander 2” happens, “The FP” is the closest we’ll get to a whole movie about breakdance fighting and the film that created a buzz at SXSW this spring, now has a home.
Genre enthusiasts Drafthouse Films — an offshoot of the revered Alamo Drafthouse cinemas — have picked up The Trost Brothers flick “The FP.” Based on their 2007 short film of the same name, the film centers on two brothers, JTRO and BTRO, who must compete for the pride of their hometown in a Beat-Beat Revolution dancing contest in Frazier Park (The FP). It’s also set in some kind of 80s-indebted retro-future apocalypse and yeah, it’s pretty much as exactly bonkers as it sounds. Just check out the trailer below and if you don’t feel like get wasted, putting some old kicks, gumming up your hair with hairspray and going to see this, then we don’t know what to tell you. This looks kind stupidly awesome. No firm release date yet, but it will hit in the first part of 2012 (and we’d guess will be trotted out to Fantastic Fest later this year).
In more straightfaced movie news, Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the latest effort from Lawrence Kasdan, the drama “Darling Companion.” Starring Kevin Kline, Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass, Ayelet Zurer and Sam Shepard, the film centers on a rescue dog belonging to Kline and Keaton’s characters that goes missing, the frantic search that follows and emotional toll it takes on this involved. So…”The Big Chill” meets “Marley & Me“? Or something? The premise has promise to be certain, but Kasdan has been in a slump since the ’90s and his last film was “Dreamcatcher” so buyer beware. Sony Pictures Classics will release film in 2012 — here’s the official synopsis:
In DARLING COMPANION, Beth (Keaton) saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway on a wintry day in Denver. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph (Kline) and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal. When Joseph loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, the distraught Beth enlists the help of the few remaining guests and a mysterious young woman (Zurer) in a frantic search. Each member of the search party is affected by the adventure, which takes them in unexpected directions – comic, harrowing, and sometimes deeply emotional.
Finally, Dakota Fanning — who has been in the shadow of her little sister Elle of late — is currently shooting a new movie titled “Now Is Good” and it found a home with Sony. Co-starring Jeremy Irvine and Kaya Scodelario, the story centers on a girl dying of leukemia who puts together a list of what she wants to achieve before she dies, the top choice being to lose her virginity. Fanning takes the lead with Irvine as her love interest and Scodelario as Zoey, her extroverted friend. Ol Parker (“Imagine Me and You“) writes and directs the flick that we’ll probably see sometime next year. [Movies/Deadline/Variety]
