'Glee' Star Darren Criss Joins Kristen Wiig In 'Imogene'

Plus Some Details On Annette Bening’s ‘Jersey Shore’-Esque Character

With “Glee” a bonafide sensation, it’s no surprise that the cast are trying to launch their careers from the small screen into the major league projects. Dianna Agron starred in “I Am Number Four” earlier this year; Chris Colfer already has his screenwriting debutStruck By Lightning” headed to cameras with Christina Hendricks among the cast; Lea Michele will be one of the many faces popping up in “New Year’s Eve” in December, while Matthew Morrison has a part in “What To Expect When You’re Expecting,” but it seems Darren Criss has landed the most promising project outside of their collective day job.

As usual, the folks over at Vulture were out on the town last night, hitting the New York City premiere of “The Whistleblower.” Among the hoi polloi was producer Celine Rattray and she confirmed the rumor that Criss has joined the film — he will shoot the project while still maintaining his commitments to “Glee.” But perhaps the most interesting info gleaned from Rattray was a few more pieces of info about Annette Bening‘s role in the film.

Starring Kristen Wiig, the film, which is set to be directed by “American Splendor” helmers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, follows a playwright (Wiig) who stages a fake suicide attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, and winds up in the custody of her gambling-addict mother (Bening). While we pointed out the Mom role is one Bening has been gravitating towards lately this will be unlike anything we’ve seen her in before.

Describing her as “a tacky ‘Jersey Shore‘ mother,” Rattray says all of that will be embodied in “her outfits, her makeup. She’s the mother who’s a little inappropriate all the time, nothing is ever too much, and it’s going to be fun.” Definitely sounds pretty great. As for Criss, he’ll play Wiig’s love interest in the film. So far, so good for a film that is shaping up to be something unique. Filming begins later this summer.
