Trend alert? Guess we’ll have to see, but filmmakers are now turning to comics to get their ambitious scripts made into something, even if ever-wary studios and financiers won’t flip the switch on them. Darren Aronofsky‘s “Noah’s Ark” and Duncan Jones‘ “Mute” are both going the graphic route and now, Kevin Smith is dusting off an old script and getting it inked.
The director tweeted recently (via /Film) that his script for a “Six Million Dollar Man” movie will be getting the comic treatment, though publishers and artists are yet to be announced. Starring Lee Majors, the popular 1970s shows focuses on a former astronaut who receives life saving surgery after a crash and is given bionic body parts. The show ran for a few seasons, spawned numerous television movies and became something of a cult phenomenon. though a feature length reboot has never gotten off the ground.
While Aronofksy and Jones hope that the comic turns of their screenplays can get interest drummed up for an eventual movie, with Smith ready to pack it in, it just looks like he’s finding an outlet for some work that would otherwise sit on the shelf. Also, he’s got some interesting programming lined up for his internet radio station S.I.R. including shows dedicated to the oral history of “Saturday Night Live” and Miramax circa 1992-2008 with plenty of guests to tell the stories.
