Morning ShortCuts: "Alienate People," Donnie Darko Director Returns

– One of our favorite books, “How To Lose Friends And Alienate People” is getting a big screen adaptation. Based on British writer Toby Young‘s memoir about his disastrous stay in New York writing for Vanity Fair and overlord boss-from-hell Graydon Carter (think “The Devil Wears Prada” for the pseudo-cultured Upper Westside-set), the film will star Simon Pegg (Young), Megan Fox, Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges (Carter) and Danny Huston. [Hollywood Reporter] Ironically, this Vanity Fair article explains much of Young’s cultural reasons for failing miserably.
– Cameron Diaz will star in “The Box,” a horror film to be directed by “Donnie Darko” helmer Richard Kelly. Meanwhile, Kelly’s poorly received sci-fi film, “Southland Tales” which was finished in 2006, looks like it’s never getting a proper release? Though Wikipedia says it will find itself a March 2008 release. [Variety]
– Christian Bale says don’t worry, the new Joker (played by Heath Ledger) will be more realistic. “We try to ground [the cartoon characters] in somewhat more reality than the other movies,” Bale said. [MTV]
