First Look: Zach Galifianakis & Keir Gilchrist In Ryan Fleck And Anna Boden's 'It's Kind Of A Funny Story'

Here’s the first look at Zach Galifianakis and Keir Gilchrist in the forthcoming adaptation of the Ned Vizzini novel “It’s Kind Of A Funny Story” by “Half Nelson” and “Sugar” directing duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

Taken from a scan in the summer issue of EW, producer Kevin Mischer tells the magazine, “The concept of the movie is like a teen version of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,’ but the tone is more similar to ‘The Breakfast Club,’ it’s funny.”

The coming-of-age dramedy features a great stellar supporting cast including the likes of Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Lauren Graham, Viola Davis, Zoe Kravitz, Aasif Mandvi and Jim Gaffigan and centers on a young teen who checks himself into a mental ward only to find himself stuck in the adult unit. There he develops a series of colorful and dramatic relationships with a group of adults and even a girl of his own age.

While he’s not exactly a big name, fans of the Diablo Cody-led Showtime series “United States Of Tara” can attest to the abilities of lead Gilchrist whose turn in that show as a conflicted gay high schooler leaves us in no doubt that this will be his breakout film under the tutelage of Fleck and Boden. Music for the pic was also revealed to be written by Canadian indie-rockers Broken Social Scene.

Early reviews for the film have also found their way online via IMDB though, as noted by commenters there, they’re authenticity can’t be assured as they simply discuss aspects of the film already known such as the fantastical sequence featuring the cast lip-syncing to Queen’s “Under Pressure.” And a description of the film as “500 Days Of Summer” meets “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” sounds somewhat like contrived marketing, right? That said, they’ve all been strong and positive thus far noting a “funny, touching, but not sappy” story that’s a “perfect mix between funny/serious,” which wouldn’t really surprise us.

“It’s Kind Of A Funny Story” hits theaters September 24th though Focus Features. We’re pretty damn excited for this one. [EW magazine via /Film]
