An aging assassin who tries to retire and finds himself pursued by a younger, stealthier clone of himself. "Looper" much? But long before Rian Johnson put his dazzling and inventive movie on the big screen, Touchstone Pictures picked up the rights to a movie called "Gemini Man" way back in 1997. Originally pitched by "Lost" writer Darren Lemke and later re-written by a group that included Johnathan Hensleigh ("The Punisher"), the movie got another draft from writer David Benioff ("The 25th Hour," "Troy") a few years ago, and was poised to be a vehicle for Curtis Hanson with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. And while that didn't happen, somewhere along the way Joe Carnahan came knocking.
Following his very well received sizzle/pitch reels for "Daredevil" that he shared in August, Carnahan has dropped another look at his proposal for "Gemini Man." While longer than the "Daredevil" spot, it's also not quite as compelling, using lots of footage from Clint Eastwood's films — and a bit of the "The Bourne Identity" — to try and get the mood across of a man hunting himself. It sort of works, but if anything proves that someone needs to make a mashup movie cut from all that actor's films. On Twitter Carnahan revealed that things got as far as doing tests with CG tests with Jon Voight to see if they could create a younger version of him, but that's about it.
