Some movement on a major franchise and a smaller-scale horror flick, so adjust your calendars accordingly….
First up, Summit has moved their brewing sci-fi saga "Ender's Game" out of a previously planned March 15, 2013 date next spring all the way to November 1, 2013. It's not clear why the move was made — the film was still without competition on its original weekend — and it's already rolling in front of cameras, so presumably there would've been time to lock it all up, but fall is slowly becoming a big blockbuster season as well. And November 2013 is no exception with Roland Emmerich's "Singularity," Marvel's "Thor 2" and the already highly anticipated "The Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire" all arriving within weeks of "Ender's Game."
In case you forgot, "Ender's Game" is an adaptation of the first book in Orson Scott Card's celebrated sci-fi series that finds the Earth at war with an insectoid race named the Formics, and follows Ender, one of a group of children being trained to be military commanders. A pretty solid cast including Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford, Viola Davis and Abigail Breslin are on board with Gavin Hood directing. We suppose the date switch will allow the filmmaker some more time to breathe and to get special effects and other post-production work done.
Meanwhile, Millenium Entertainment have pegged July 13th as the date they'll turn on the horror/thriller "Red Lights." Starring Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver, Elizabeth Olsen and Cillian Murphy, the film tells the story of a psychologist (Weaver) and her assistant (Murphy) whose study of paranormal activity leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (De Niro). The psychologist attempts to debunk the psychic's work after he steps back into the limelight after 30 years. We caught the film at Sundance and enjoyed it, saying it's "equal parts deft and daft, that coyly addresses the divide between seeing and believing." We presume this will be a limited rollout. "Red Lights" will be battling Michael Winterbottom's "Trishna" at the arthouse that weekend. [ComingSoon/STYD]
