As we noted in our features, NYFF Preview: 12 Films To Watch From A Long Must-See Slate, any Paul Thomas Anderson film is an event, and the announcement of a surprise new documentary from the filmmaker, "Junun," marks an extra special occasion. Indeed, the New York Film Festival has the honor of being home to the World Premiere of the short doc featuring composer Jonny Greenwood, which runs 54 minutes, and if you’re bummed you won’t be in Gotham to see the movie for yourself, well you’ll be able to stream it in the comfort of your own home right after those in the Big Apple check it out first.
MUBI will have the exclusive streaming debut of "Junun" starting at midnight on Thursday, October 8th, literally hours after it screens that evening at NYFF. And this is a terrific coup for the company which specializes in arthouse and foreign film fare, who will undoubtedly see an uptick of subscribers lured in by the name of Paul Thomas Anderson, who will hopefully discover a whole world of cinema that isn’t available to them elsewhere with such convenience. Here’s the synopsis for "Junun":
In Spring 2015 Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and ‘The Rajasthan Express’ were hosted by the Maharaja of Jodhpur at Mehrangarh Fort. This beautiful and joyously unique 3 week union resulted in the album and film JUNUN (the madness of love).
“We’re huge fans of MUBI and wanted to be a part of what they do. Hopefully people will discover both the music that’s been made by Shye and Jonny and a great place to watch films,” Anderson said in a statement. Sounds likes a win-win scenario all around. So sign up for MUBI to check out PTA’s latest, as well lots of movies that equally deserving of attention. [Variety]
