Watch: 9-Minute Look At The Sound Design Of 'Jurassic World' Plus Clip Of Jimmy Fallon's Cameo

Jurassic WorldColin Trevorrow’s “Jurassic World” is currently breaking all sorts of box office records, including being the fastest film in all of movie history to surpass the $1 billion dollar global gross mark. And one of the most impressive parts of the film is its killer sound design: being able to hear the roar of the Indominus Rex and the shrieks of highly-trained raptors were just as great as being able to see these vicious dinosaur predators brought to life with CGI.

Now the SoundWorks Collective has released a new video profiling the film’s Sound Designer and Re-recording Mixer, Peter Horner, as well as Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer Al Neslon, both from Skywalker Sound, where the sound design for the film was created, recorded, edited and finalized.

The video has Nelson remarking how they tried to stay true to the sound of the T-Rex from the original “Jurassic Park” but also wanted to “go outside of the Rex world” and use higher-frequency tones in re-creating the mutant-like shrieks and squeals of the film’s genetically-engineered super beast. As a result, sounds from walruses, beluga whales, lions, spider monkeys, dolphins and even pigs went into the voice of the Indominus Rex. The voice of the epicly sized Mosasaur was also based on a combination of aquatic animals such as the walrus and the whale, but pitched in different ways.

The video also notes the tricky process for coming up with the sounds for the gyrosphere that Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins go off-roading with in the movie. Because the vehicle is technically non-existent by today’s technological standards, Horner had to create “hypothetical” noises for it by recording the sounds of a spinning glass jug on a potter’s wheel. But for most, the memorable moment of the gyrosphere sequence was Jimmy Fallon’s cameo as an attraction guide.
