FX Puts Their 'Trust' In Danny Boyle's New Limited Series

While Danny Boyle‘s “Steve Jobs” didn’t get the box office love it deserved (it’s a terrific film), don’t lean on that fact to suggest that it explains his move into television for his next project. The director hasn’t been shy about working on the small screen, launching the procedural “Babylon” starring Brit Marling a couple of years back. And now he’s headed to FX for what sounds like a cracking series.

FX has ordered ten episodes for what will be the first installment of “Trust.” Penned by Boyle’s frequent collaborator Simon Beaufoy (“127 Hours,” “Slumdog Millionaire“) this is a true story saga about the wealthy Getty family. Here’s the synopsis via EW:

Trust chronicles the story of the Getty family, particularly focused on John Paul Getty III, the heir to the Getty oil fortune. The first installment takes place in 1973, when the young Getty is kidnapped in Rome and his mafia captors bank on a multi-million dollar ransom, but can’t understand why nobody seems to want their captive back.

Unfortunately, the Italian police think it’s a prank and decline to investigate, Paul’s father is lost in a heroin daze, and Paul’s grandfather is marooned in a Tudor mansion in the English countryside alongside his five mistresses. Paul’s only hope is his mother, who is broke.

Fascinating stuff. Coincidentally, the 2015 Black List featured a script by David Scarpa, “All The Money In The World,” which details the kidnapping element of the story. Unfortunately, it looks like he’s been beaten to the punch.

Boyle will direct “Trust” (though it’s not yet determined how many episodes) and produce alongside Beaufoy. As for feature efforts, the director is supposed to mount his “Trainspotting” sequel this year, but things have been quiet lately on that, but let’s hope that it’s still movie ahead.
