First Look: David Oyelowo As Martin Luther King Jr. In Oscar Contender 'Selma'

SelmaGiven the events on the ground right now in Ferguson, Missouri, there is going to be an undeniable resonance with Ava DuVernay‘s "Selma" when it arrives later this year. The Martin Luther King Jr. pic, once attached to Lee Daniels, tells a remarkable true story that hasn’t lost any of its power since it all happened more than four decades ago.

Featuring the ensemble cast of David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Andre Holland, Omar J. Dorsey, Tessa Thompson, Tim Roth, Wendell Pierce, and Colman Domingo, "Selma" will tell the true story of Martin Luther King Jr. and his involvement in the Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery, which captured the attention of the nation and the world, and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Of course, the subject matter alone puts Oscar contention all over this, but let’s not forget that this film has formidable talent both in front of and behind the camera too, that will hopefully take this beyond just being a mere history lesson (nevertheless, an important one).

"Selma" opens in limited release on Christmas Day and goes wide on January 9, 2015.
