Filmmaker Jason Reitman is a perennial figure on the Oscar circuit. Since “Juno” in 2007, which earned a Best Picture and Best Director nomination, he’s been part of the awards season conversation. His last two outings, “Young Adult” (too dark and cynical for Academy voters) and “Labor Day” (too schmaltzy), missed their mark, but both were considered Oscar material immediately upon release.
Reitman has a new film on the way and it’s sure to be part of the Oscar conversation: Will the film be received along the lines of “Up In The Air” (serious contender) or one of the aforementioned pictures (not quite on the mark for voters)? “Men, Women & Children” Reitman’s six feature, has been set for a limited release on Oct. 3 by Paramount before expanding wider on Oct. 17.
The movie stars Emma Thompson, Kaitlyn Dever, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ansel Elgort, Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer, Elena Kampouris, Dean Norris, Adam Sandler and will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
TIFF’s short synopsis: “Featuring a sterling ensemble cast —including Emma Thompson, Judy Greer, Adam Sandler, and Rosemarie DeWitt— the new film from Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Labor Day) offers a poignant look at the many ways that the internet has changed the relationships between teenagers and their parents.”
In limited release “Men, Women & Children” will face off against David Fincher‘s "Gone Girl" on October 3 (which will already be in wide release), Brad Pitt‘s WWII drama "Fury" and the Jake Gyllenhaal drama "Nightcrawler" on the much busier weekend of October 17. Two new photos have also been released (one from EW‘s fall preview) which you can see above and below. By the looks of the photos, two of the major stars in the movie are Ansel Elgort from “The Fault In Our Stars” and Kaitlyn Dever from “Short Term 12.” [Release date via HitFix]
