You knew there was a reason Samuel L. Jackson got snatched up for a nine picture deal by Marvel last year. And while yes, duh, many people did speculate that this deal would eventually include a “S.H.I.E.L.D” movie — the covert law-enforcement operation that pulls “The Avengers” team together — including us, none of us really thought it would happen.
Or hoped anyhow. Especially after watching “Iron Man 2.” Samuel L. Jackson’s acting is not only obnoxiously arrogant and unctuous (he plays Samuel L. Jackson pretty much all the time now), as we mentioned recently, every time “The Avengers” commercial interludes, sorry, plotlines come up in the film, the pace and momentum of the film grind to a halt.
Well according to Jackson himself in an interview with RadioBigBoy (via Cinemablend) we should expect a movie that stars Jackson himself as the character Nick Fury.
“The Avengers should start shooting some time next year, and then some time after that there’ll be a big S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.”
So yeah, we shouldn’t be shocked, but we’re not convinced that Jackson can carry this entire movie on his own. Then again, we don’t know what that movie would be. A “big S.H.I.E.L.D” movie could include “Avengers,” 2nd-tier “Avengers” members, who knows. A “S.H.I.E.L.D.” movie would also contain some good (Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson and some bad (Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow).
RadioBigBoy convinces Jackson to talk about the departure of Terrence Howard in “Iron Man 2,” who failed to come to an agreement with Marvel and was replaced by Don Cheadle in the sequel. Jackson speculates that Howard, “left $30-40 million on the table” and says that the character War Machine “is gonna show up a lot.”
What we’re saying is, sorry reader Terrence who gets perturbed every time we don’t deliver agreeable sentiments about Marvel films, but our belief in the quality of these movies going forward is waning.
