While “The Great Gatsby” and “Midnight In Paris” didn’t exactly kickstart pop culture nostalgia for the Jazz Age era, it’s a period that continues to enchant filmmakers, and it’s easy to see why. The characters are just as colorful as the setting, the music is great, and visual possibilities are endless. And Jennifer Lawrence is looking to play one of the biggest figures of the time.

Variety reports that the actress is signing up to play the lead in “Zelda” about Zelda Fitzgerald, with Ron Howard developing the project as a potential directorial vehicle. Emma Frost (“Shameless,” “The White Queen“) will be writing the script about Zelda’s life as she tried to establish her own identity outside the shadow of her famous husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Zelda Fitzgerald has already been tackled a few times by various actresses including Natasha Richardson in the 1993 TNT flick also called “Zelda,” Alison Pill in “Midnight In Paris,” and more recently by Vanessa Kirby in “Genius.” But it will be Christina Ricci in Amazon‘s upcoming series “Z: The Beginning of Everything” that will likely prove the potent competition. All that said, Lawrence is one of the biggest stars on the planet, and it would take a lot to overshadow her own Zelda Fitzgerald project.
No word yet on when filming will begin, but the project has financing and is set up at Lionsgate, so it’s likely just a matter of locking down a director, getting out the calendar, and making a schedule.
