Michael Fassbender Enters The Animus In First Clip From ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Plus New Photos

Assassin’s Creed” has a lot going for it. The film has an all-star cast with Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons. Justin Kurzel, fresh off his acclaimed “Macbeth,” is directing. The movie is also based on one of the biggest video game franchises around. Unfortunately, that’s perhaps its biggest detriment. Video game films have yet to really succeed, and the newest clip from “Assassin’s Creed” starts to show some flaws.

In the short clip, Sophia, who works for a mysterious corporation (of course), is explaining to Callum the basic premise for the film. He will be plugged into a machine, called the Animus, which will make him relive the memories of one of his long dead ancestors, who happened to be an assassin. It sounds like a really roundabout way to get to assassins fighting during the Spanish Inquisition, but that’s also the premise of the video games, so that’s what the filmmakers had to work with.

Perhaps this is the problem with video game films. The plots of these video games play out over the course of dozens of hours, but the movie crams it all into two. Wonky premise notwithstanding, “Assassin’s Creed” also opens less than a week after “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The Christmas season is always a great time for movies, but these films seem to be fighting over the same audience, which could be bad for ‘Creed.’ Michael Fassbender is hoping that he doesn’t have a big blemish on his IMDB page like Jake Gyllenhaal has with his failed video game period piece, “Prince of Persia.”

“Assassin’s Creed” opens December 21st.
