Welcome to another edition of Over/Under Movies, the podcast in which we choose one overrated film and one underrated film — similar in tone, genre, style, or however we may see fit — and we discuss them.
On this episode, Oktay Ege Kozak and myself are joined by fellow Playlist writer Andy Crump as he takes us on two different, but oddly similar sci-fi journeys about philosophy and machine overlords. First up is Andy’s overrated pick, the Wachowskis’ 1999 seminal film “The Matrix.” We accidentally get topical, as news of a proposed reboot at Warner Bros. surfaced as this episode was being prepped, but just like The Wachowskis’ breakout feature, we use “The Matrix” as a vessel to get onto a variety of topics, pondering if the film still holds up, if blockbuster spectacle peaked with its breakthrough special effects, or if we have just grown more cynical as a moviegoing culture and “The Matrix” now seems quaint.
We then move onto “The World’s End,” Edgar Wright’s finale to his beloved Cornetto Trilogy. This one is more of a personal choice, but along with being laugh-out-loud funny, we discuss how poignant the film is in its approach to reliving your past (we also bring up the similarly- themed “T2 Trainspotting” in the process), and because of that confrontation, why we feel it is the least-loved in Wright’s trilogy.
