Now, before you get all excited, unfortunately, Tom Hardy only has a small role in the upcoming Brit musical, “London Road,” and isn’t featured all that much in the trailer. But still, it’s Tom Hardy In A Musical, and while it’s not Tom Hardy With A Puppy (sequel to “The Drop” please, or someone send me a supercut with all the Hardy/dog scenes), it’s an intriguing prospect nonetheless.
Led by Olivia Colman, based on the stage show (with the entire, original London cast landing roles in the movie), and directed by Rufus Norris (“Broken“), “London Road” finds its roots in a rather grim, true-story tale about Steve Wright, who murdered five sex workers in 2006. It’s not exactly the most obvious material to have people break out into song, but the clever conceit uses interviews and comments from actual residents of the area at the time for the lyrics. Here’s the official synopsis:
LONDON ROAD tells the moving story of a community coming together during the darkest of experiences. It is based on the true events that occurred in 2006, when the town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. When a local resident was charged, and then convicted, of the murders, the community grappled with what it meant to be at the epicenter of this tragedy. The film uses the actual words of the residents of London Road, set to an innovative musical score, to tell this gripping story in an extraordinary way. Hailed as a remarkable, ground-breaking work during the stage production’s two sell-out runs at Britain’s renowned National Theatre, this film reunites the award winning cast and creative team for a truly unforgettable experience.
“London Road” will open on September 21st. [The Film Stage]
