Our guest this episode is filmmaker Cameron Bruce Nelson, director of the feature “Some Beasts,” starring indie hard hitters Frank Mosley and Lindsay Burdge. Nelson toured with the film extensively and won some accolades along the way (Best Film at Virginia Film Festival and Best Cinematography at Dallas International Film Festival). Soon after, the director was selected to take part in the late Abbas Kiarostami’s filmmaking workshop in Cuba, a once-in-a-lifetime experience which saw over 50 filmmakers under the master’s mentorship. Nelson then decided to take the plunge and get a graduate degree; the director is currently enrolled in Columbia while setting up screenings of “Some Beasts” here and there.
Speaking of “here”: Indie Beat is giving “Some Beasts” its first New York screening over at Spectacle Theater on Thursday, May 18th at 7:30pm. We’ll be having a Q&A with Nelson, so please come check it out!
In the meantime, whet your appetite with our audio interview. Cameron and I spoke about the writing process, the power of location, Romanian cinema, and the feedback loop of being in school and working on other people’s projects.
