On the exhaustive list of sinister things, a run-of-the-mill snowman doesn’t rank particularly high. He’s too cheery, too saddled with an association to Frosty, and, generally, too rotund to be threatening. However, the moment you have a young boy find the scarf of his missing mother twisted around that snowman’s neck, a soupçon of menace gets sprinkled into the mix. Because someone put the scarf there for that boy to find — someone desecrated dear Frosty with the implication of murder. Now that is the type of thing that screams sinister.

Such is the catalyst for the upcoming film “The Snowman,” a crime drama based on the Norwegian novel of the same name by best selling author Jo Nesbo. Tomas Alfredson directs the movie, no doubt pulling from his not-inconsiderable experience bringing bestselling books to film — most notably, 2008’s vampire horror-romance “Let the Right One In” as well as 2011’s espionage-thriller “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Alfredson is joined by writers Matthew Michael Carnahan (“World War Z” & “Lions for Lambs”) and Hossein Amini (“Drive” & “The Wings of the Dove”). When an elite crime squad’s lead detective investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit, the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.
“The Snowman” stars Michael Fassbender as detective Harry Hole and Rebecca Ferguson as Katrine Bratt, while J.K. Simmons, Toby Jones, Jakob Oftebro, Chloë Sevigny, and Val Kilmer join the film in supporting roles. “The Snowman” opens on October 20th.
