Following the relative success of season one, “Vice Principals” returns for its second season on HBO. The follow up to the debut season will find Gamby (Danny McBride) trying to find out who shot him at the end of season one, with the help of his friends and co-workers. Of course, none of this is as straight-laced as it reads, with the series injecting the proceedings with their familiar zany humor and off beat narrative tricks.
The show has already released a teaser trailer, which both hilariously and in theme with the series, didn’t offer up anything about what the show is actually about, as Gamby stares down a tiger in the wasteland of the school. Mixing genres with ease and creating a distinct, visual tone, the show may get overshadowed by other comedy highlights such as “Veep” and “Silicon Valley” or event television staple “Game of Thrones” or even whatever the heck Dwayne Johnson is doing over at “Ballers” other than (presumably) being charming, but there’s no denying that “Vice Principals” succeeds in separating itself from the rest of HBO’s lineup.
Despite this, fans of the series always knew it was going to have a short shelf-life with it being announced that the second season would be its last even before the series had aired. In the era of Peak TV, it was just too easy for this one to be overlooked as people scrambled to catch up on what they believed was “prestige television”.
Brought to life by the team behind “Eastbound & Down” and co-starring Walton Goggins, season two of “Vice Principals” arrives on September 17th.
