As we patiently await whatever Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis are cooking up for their 1950s set fashion movie (on that premise alone, just tell me a release date and I’ll show up), let’s take a trip back to their knockout first collaboration “There Will Be Blood.”

Released in 2007, the film arguably marked a distinct new direction in the filmmaker’s career, with his pictures becoming less marked by their influences and increasingly distinguished by an ambitious, unique moviemaking language. The picture was also a tremendous success, scoring eight Oscar nominations and winning two for Best Actor and Best Cinematography. A film about ambition, religion, greed and the American empire, there’s a lot to dive into, and this 2007 talk at 92Y with Anderson and Day-Lewis is worth diving into.
It’s a nice opportunity to go long with two guys who tend to be hesitant about going to far into their process. Also, Daniel Day-Lewis’ shirt is kinda great. Sit back, and give this one a whirl.
