Marvel‘s massive machine may be dominating the multiplex and growing like crazy on the small screen, but no one would call the efforts high art. While Kevin Feige has certainly done a tremendous job rounding up top-tier talent for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are no illusions that the movies are anything more than well-executed, but still largely disposable, entertainment. But David Fincher sees hope on television for those who want to do something richer, without having to serve a blockbuster machine.
In an interview excerpt captured by Yellow King Film Boy, Fincher addresses the narrative possibilities available by Peak TV, by taking a slight dig at Marvel.
“Look, there’s a very large talent pool of people who are- don’t feel there’s much for them in terms of sustenance working for Marvel,” he explained. “And I think that if we can make a playground for them that is thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, challenging stories and figure out ways to pull them into it, there’s a chance at something that isn’t lassoed and hogtied by three acts. And there’s something else that doesn’t have to be 22-minute half hour or have a cliffhanger. I think it is an exciting time.”
Indeed, Fincher’s new Netflix series “Mindhunter” is a testament to creating compelling, riveting, adult drama that finds fresh ways to engage, while subverting the tropes you might associate with procedurals. The show features no A-list stars, runs heavy on academic and analytic dialogue, yet is also highly entertaining, exceedingly clever, and contains one of the most innovative setups for a second season in recent memory.
To put it bluntly, Fincher is excited for television because “There’s a great new way to kick people’s asses.” The director is certainly setting the example, and arguably made one of the early Peak TV breakthroughs with “House Of Cards.”
