Paramount is probably wondering where all this “Star Trek” love was when “Star Trek: Beyond” was released last year. Not only is Quentin Tarantino developing his own “Star Trek” movie, but “Black Mirror” is offering its skewed take on the beloved sci-fi series with “U.S.S. Callister.”
Directed by Toby Haynes, and starring Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson and Michaela Coel, the episode looks and feels like a bubblegum flavored romp through a very specific era of “Star Trek,” however, creator and writer Charlie Brooker says there are even more influences on the episode, but he can’t talk about the just yet.
“There definitely was but if I say what it is then it gives it away,” he told EW. “I will say there have been questions about how is ‘Black Mirror’ going to address Trump and Brexit and the way the world is now. I kept saying, ‘Well it isn’t, really.’ We tried not to think about that. But if you look at ‘Callister’ there are some stuff that leaked in from the outside world. There is stuff that has to do with regimes, you could say, that’s not there and also very much there.
Still no date for the new season of “Black Mirror” but we’re guessing it’ll hit before the month is up.
