2017 has come to a close, and with any hope, the anxiety-inducing existentialism that is staring us in the face day-after-day, minute-after-minute, will also come to a close in 2018. However, what I hope doesn’t end is the string of quality cinema we have been graced in 2017.

It’s easy to belabor the point that 2017 was a great year for cinema amongst the vacuum of film critics and cinephiles that we occupy, but this year, that quality seeped into the mainstream. As our yearly box office breakdown points out, audiences could smell a bomb from a mile away, and chose to largely ignore big budget tax write-offs, or franchises who are already way past their sell-by date. They instead opted to spend money on, well, still big franchises, but ones that are up to a certain level of quality, and ones that even managed to take some chances within their tentpole sandbox.

And so, with the closing of each year, comes the “Best Films of 2017” list which, as we all know, is arbitrary and should be taken with a grain of salt, but dammit are they so much fun to compile. And this video I’ve put together is honestly the single most fun I have had putting a “Best of” list together. Enjoy the video, any and all feedback is welcomed, have a safe and Happy New Year, and finally, because I do this part-time, I have not seen “Call Me By Your Name,” “The Post,” “Phantom Thread,” or “I, Tonya” (three of those aren’t even out in Seattle yet), so don’t @ me about them being omitted from the list.
