The saga as we know it might be ending with “Star Wars: Episode IX,” the franchise is hardly finished. Of course, there are the spinoff films which, for now, are telling stories that run adjacent to the saga or give us origin stories of characters we love, like “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” But the galaxy is huge, Lucasfilm is opening it up. As we already know, Rian Johnson is creating a whole new trilogy. Now, another filmmaking pair are getting their own shot at creating some canon.
“Game Of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce a new series of “Star Wars” films. Of course, there are no details yet except for two crucial things — this series will be separate from the “Star Wars” saga and from Johnson’s brewing series.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is complete.”
Huge news, but as that last quote indicates, it’ll be a while before we learn more about what they’re cooking up.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” opens on May 25th.
