When the news broke that Kristen Wiig is in talks to play the villain in the upcoming “Wonder Woman 2,” the general sentiment shared by fans was, “Wha…huh?” Not that Wiig isn’t an accomplished actress, but she’s not the first name that comes to mind when you think of someone to stand toe-to-toe with Wonder Woman. Well, now word comes that Wiig wasn’t the studio’s first choice for the villain role.
According to Variety film reporter Justin Kroll, Warner Bros. first approached actress Emma Stone for the role of Cheetah in “Wonder Woman 2.” “Studio originally went out to Emma Stone on this but after she passed [director Patty] Jenkins personally picked Wiig as her choice for Cheetah,” said Kroll on his Twitter.
Again, like Wiig, Stone isn’t an actress that you would immediately deem as a natural fit for a villain role. However, judging by these two names, it seems as if Warner Bros., and specifically director Patty Jenkins, has something interesting in mind for Cheetah. It’s hard to pin down exactly what origin Jenkins is going to incorporate for the villain, but clearly, Jenkins and WB weren’t looking for a physical powerhouse for the role.
No reason was given for Stone passing on the role. Perhaps, she just isn’t ready for another attempt at superhero life just yet. After two “Amazing Spider-Man” films, Emma Stone might be done with superheroes altogether. However, knowing that she was approached for the role it’ll be interesting to see if, and when, Stone decides to dip her toes back into the world of spandex and superpowers, as something other than a love-interest.
Since I've spent the last hour yelling at people let me give some updates on this recent breaks. Studio originally went out to Emma Stone on this but after she passed Jenkins personally picked Wiig as her choice for Cheetah
