With all the characters featured in the newest “Avengers: Infinity War” trailer, the big story this weekend was who WASN’T in the trailer. First appearing way back in 2011’s “Thor,” Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye has been a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even though, as the character is quick to point out, he’s just a normal guy who shoots arrows, fans were shocked to see that the character wasn’t seen in any footage from the upcoming galaxy-spanning epic battle.
According to ‘Infinity War’ directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, Hawkeye isn’t forgotten. In fact, there’s a perfectly logical explanation for the archer’s absence. “Hawkeye, coming out of [“Captain America: Civil War”], is in the same position that Cap and Falcon are at the end of that movie. And Ant-Man. And coming into this movie characters who were on Cap’s side coming out of the ‘Civil War,’” Joe Russo says in a recent set visit. “Some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths in them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.”
Anthony Russo expands further by saying, “He has a unique reaction to the ‘Civil War’ situation that puts him in a special spot in this film.”
The “’Civil War’ situation” is the result of Captain America and his team (including Hawkeye) going against the government order against the Avengers. Due to them defying the new Sokovia Accords, the heroes are fugitives and on the run. It seems, Hawkeye isn’t going the underground superhero route that Cap, Black Widow, Falcon, and others are doing. Instead, he’s probably “retired” to his farm with his wife and kids, which was established back in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
However, Hawkeye’s absence from the trailer, and subsequent new poster, wasn’t allowed to stand for long. Twitter user BossLogic, who is known for great MCU photoshops, was quick to release a new version of the ‘Infinity War’ poster with Hawkeye having a more…prominent showcase.
“Avengers: Infinity War” will take over the world April 27.
