We’ve all been there: smashing picture frames, throwing out the other person’s things, and calling the other person a “son of a bitch” because they broke our hearts. Those are the easy parts of dealing with a break-up, the hard parts are discovering who you are without that person and figuring out what’s next. In New Line Cinema’s new comedy “Life of the Party,” Melissa McCarthy explores that “what’s next” stage.
As seen in the new trailer, when her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college…landing in the same class and school as her daughter.
Lucky for Deanna, there isn’t any wrong way to handle heartbreak (or at least that’s what the internet’s boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, once said) and heading back to school seems like the perfect place for her. Trying to find a new lease on life and plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna—now Dee Rock—embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.
However, Deanna’s daughter isn’t completely sold on the idea of going to school with her mom. Especially because parents can be embarrassing and college is supposed to be our time to be free of our parents, a concept that us ’90s babies will remember from “An Extremely Goofy Movie” but with more sex.
The film also stars Gillian Jacobs (“Don’t Think Twice,” “Love,” “Community”), Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids,” “Sisters”), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”), Matt Walsh (“Veep,” “Ghostbusters”), Molly Gordon (“Love the Coopers,” “Animal Kingdom”), with Stephen Root (“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates”), and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver (“Silver Linings Playbook,” “Animal Kingdom”), Jessie Ennis (“Better Call Saul”), Adria Arjona (“True Detective,” “Emerald City”), Debby Ryan (“Jessie”) and Jimmy O. Yang (“Silicon Valley”).
McCarthy and husband, the film’s director Ben Falcone, co-wrote and produced the screenplay through their production company, On the Day. Chris Henchy also produced the film, with Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Michael Disco and David Siegel serving as executive producers.
Slated for release beginning May 11, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
