Seemingly Cursed 'Locke & Key' TV Show Gets Series Order From Netflix

It’s been almost a decade in the making, but the long-in-development “Locke & Key” TV series is finally going to see the light of day on Netflix. After what seems like a half-dozen false starts, author Joe Hill’s comic book series got a straight-to-series order from the streaming service, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the series is going to start from scratch…again.

“Locke & Key” tells the story of a mother and her three kids who move into a haunted house after the brutal murder of her husband. While at the house, the kids discover keys that give them powers, but also attract the attention of a demon. Yeah, it’s strange, but the comic book series has been critically-acclaimed for years and is tailor-made for TV.

Before this series order, “Locke & Key” has gone through a number of iterations over the years. The first attempt to bring the comic book to the small screen happened way back in 2010. The series was picked up by Fox for a pilot episode, directed by Mark Romanek, with Steven Spielberg listed as an executive producer. That pilot was never picked up, but eventually was screened at San Diego Comic-Con, with huge fanfare.

Then, after lying dormant for a few years, “Locke & Key” was revived for yet another pilot at Hulu. That episode was directed by Andy Muschietti, of “It” fame, and starred Frances O’Connor. However, the series wasn’t picked up. But as we know, “Locke & Key” producers are a persistent bunch and used this pilot as a calling card to other networks. And finally, Netflix not only ordered a new pilot (to be completely recast for the third time) but also gave the show a series order.

There’s no word yet on a new director or cast, but it appears that this time, the cast and crew might get to stick around for more than one episode.
