'Widows' Trailer: Viola Davis And Her Crew Attempt An Incredibly Dangerous Heist To Save Their Lives

It’s been five years since Steve McQueen‘s last film, the prestigious Oscar-winner “12 Years A Slave.” With his return to cinema in “Widows,” written by “Gone Girl” scribe Gillian Flynn, it appears those 5 years will have been well worth the wait.

Instead of pursuing the type of fare one would usually associate with the Oscar category, McQueen dips his hand into the pulp of the crime genre. As seen in the new trailer, “Widows” focuses on the titular group of women, who decide to pull of a heist to pay off debts owed by their late husbands. Unlike the all-female heist film from earlier this year, “Ocean’s 8,” McQueen’s film ditches the comedy, glitz, and glamour for a more gritty, dark approach to the heist genre.

However, like the aforementioned “Ocean’s 8,” “Widows” does feature a pretty great cast. Headlined by Viola Davis, who is an Oscar-winning actress of the highest caliber, the film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Garret Dillahunt, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Jon Bernthal, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo with Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson.

“Widows” hits theaters on November 16.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From Academy Award®-winning director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) and co-writer and bestselling author Gillian Flynn (“Gone Girl”) comes a blistering, modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption. “Widows” is the story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. Set in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, tensions build when Veronica (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) take their fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. “Widows” also stars Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Daniel Kaluuya, Lukas Haas and Brian Tyree Henry.
