'Apostle' Trailer: 'The Raid' Director Returns In New Netflix Thriller With 'Legion' Star Dan Stevens

Hell yes, a new Gareth Evans movie! After a brief, but brutal tease on Evans’ own Instagram, Netflix has released the trailer for his latest film “Apostle.” And it looks extremely Gareth Evans-y, which means crazy, but highly stylized action sequences. Even star Dan Stevens has gushed over the director dubbing him as “the Welsh Tarantino.”

Evans broke out to huge acclaim with the awesome “The Raid” and it’s no secret that we’re huge fans of his. However, “Apostle” marks a step away from action and a step closer to horror. “This is not an action movie. [Fans] are probably expecting a Ye Olde version of ‘Taken,’” Evans mentioned to Nerdist after warning that “It’s not for the squeamish. But the violence in it in certain places is more inferred than what’s shown, especially in the first part of the film. And then it starts to unravel as the story intensifies.”

Check out the official synopsis below.

London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives under the leadership of the charismatic Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen). As Thomas infiltrates the island’s community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult’s ranks nonetheless – and uncovers a secret far more evil than he could have imagined. Written and directed by Gareth Evans (THE RAID), APOSTLE is a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.

In addition to Stevens, “Apostle” also stars Michael Sheen, Lucy Boynton, and Kristine Froseth. In his post-“Downton Abbey” life, Stevens is proving to be a super interesting actor to watch. He’s tackled thrillers with “The Guest,” played against the nice guy type in “Colossal,” is going Lynch-ian in “Legion,” and also played the titular Beast of “Beauty and the Beast.” Diving into a horror-thriller seems like a logical step for an actor not afraid of genre.

“Apostle” will have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX (Sept 20 – 27), and will be released globally on Netflix on October 12.
