Alexander Skarsgård Set To Join The Battle In Adam Wingard's 'Godzilla Vs. Kong'

Remember when cinematic universes were all the rage? One could argue that they still are, as studios are still looking to replicate Marvel Studios’ success, but lately, the idea of a cinematic universe has taken a backseat for most franchises, as studios fail time after time trying to launch a new universe (we’re looking at you, Tom Cruise and “The Mummy).

But one of the few success stories is what Legendary is doing with the MonsterVerse that began in 2014’s “Godzilla,” and will pay off in 2020 with the upcoming “Godzilla vs. Kong.” And hoping to lead the way in that massive film is now award-winning actor Alexander Skarsgård.

Variety is reporting that Skarsgård has joined the cast for “Godzilla vs. Kong” alongside Brian Tyree Henry, Julian Dennison, and Millie Bobbie Brown. Exact plot details aren’t available, but judging by the title, it’s safe to assume that the new Godzilla, introduced in the aforementioned 2014 film and soon to be seen in the 2019 film “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” will be facing off against the recently rebooted King Kong that was introduced in last year’s “Kong: Skull Island.”

Skarsgård earned an Emmy last year for his work on the first season of “Big Little Lies.” However, he’s probably best known for his run on the HBO series “True Blood,” as well as recent films like “The Legend of Tarzan” and “Hold the Dark.” He’s also headlining the upcoming highly-anticipated series “The Little Drummer Girl,” which is directed by Park Chan-wook.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” is set to be directed by Adam Wingard, who is probably best known for his work on two of this writer’s favorite films of the last decade, “You’re Next” and the criminally underrated “The Guest.” However, most recently, Wingard helmed 2016’s “Blair Witch” reboot/sequel and last year’s controversial Netflix film, “Death Note.”

“Godzilla vs. Kong” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 20, 2020.
