Zac Efron, Kate Hudson, & Craig Robinson Join Ana Lily Amirpour's Fantasy Film 'Blood Moon'

Ana Lily Amirpour is a filmmaker that is on the verge of becoming a huge name in Hollywood. After a super strong start to her career, with the film “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” Amirpour returned in 2016 with the daring (and underrated) “The Bad Batch.” Now, for her third film, “Blood Moon,” it appears that Amirpour has put together her most high-profile cast yet with a film that could be the breakout she’s been waiting for.

Deadline is reporting that Zac Efron, Kate Hudson, and Craig Robinson have joined the cast of the fantasy film “Blood Moon.” The film, as we learned earlier this year, is said to tell the story of a girl who escapes a mental institute in New Orleans and begins to exhibit strange and dangerous abilities. “Blood Moon” is inspired by the fantasy-adventure movies of the ‘80s and 90’s and will feature violence and humor paired with music ranging from heavy metal to Italian techno. If you expected Amirpour to begin to play it safe with her third film, you were sorely mistaken.

“Birdman” producer John Lesher, who joins the “Blood Moon” team, says, “Lily’s unique vision and poetic style sets her apart from the pack. She is truly one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.”

After ‘A Girl Walks Home’ was featured as part of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Amirpour’s “The Bad Batch” premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize. Since “The Bad Batch,” the filmmaker has worked in TV, directing episodes of “Legion,” “Castle Rock,” and the upcoming “The Twilight Zone.”

No word on a release date for “Blood Moon,” but production is set to begin in spring 2019.
