Diablo Cody & Jason Reitman Team Up For New HBO Comedy Series Starring David Spade

Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman are continuing their successful partnership as they move from this year’s “Tully” into the world of TV. And they’re bringing along “Saturday Night Live” alum (and Adam Sandler regular) David Spade along for the ride.

The Wrap is reporting that David Spade has signed on to star in a new HBO comedy series from writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman. The series, currently untitled, follows the story of Calvin Walsh (Spade), a former rock star and heroin addict, as he attempts to make it as a water now that he’s clean, sober, and no longer in the limelight. While working, he meets a young woman, Baily, and both their lives are changed forever.

As mentioned, Cody and Reitman are old pals, having collaborated on this year’s Charlize Theron film “Tully,” as well as previous films like “Young Adult” and “Juno.” However, this marks their first team-up on the small screen.

Of course, Cody is no stranger to TV work, having created the Showtime series “The United States of Tara,” starring Toni Collette, as well as the recent Amazon series “One Mississippi.” Reitman has also dabbled in TV work, as producer and director on the TV series “Casual,” as well as two episodes of “The Office.”

Spade is a comedian that has been the star of TV shows and films dating back to the mid-‘90s. He’s most famous for the films starring alongside Chris Farley, but has been going strong throughout the last two decades. Other than ‘SNL,’ his most famous TV experience comes from the long-running sitcoms “Just Shoot Me” and “Rules of Engagement.” Since then, he’s appeared in multiple TV projects, including “Roadies,” “The Mayor,” and “Love.”

No word on a release date for this new Cody/Reitman/Spade collab.
