There are so many comedies about the follies that come with adult romantic relationships that it’s impossible to keep up. However, when a film with such a tried and true concept like that has a cast as good as the one in “Untogether,” we stop and take notice.
As alluded to earlier, the premise, as seen in the new trailer, for “Untogether” is about as easy to understand as any other romantic dramedy. Focusing on two relationships, the film follows two sisters who are in their own respective terrible coupling. One sister just had a one-night stand with a famous doctor and can’t seem to shake him, despite trying to play it cool. The other sister is in a longterm relationship with an ex-rock star, who thinks it’s appropriate to bring up the Holocaust when talking with a Rabbi. Hijinks ensue.

All kidding aside, “Untogether” rises above the typical romantic dramedy dreck based solely on the cast, alone. Starring real-life sisters Jemima Kirke (“Girls”) and Lola Kirke (the criminally underseen “Gemini”), the cast also includes Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn, Alice Eve, Scott Caan, and Billy Crystal. So maybe there’s something to this film after all?
“Untogether” debuted at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and hits select theaters and VOD on February 8.
Here’s the synopsis:
UNTOGETHER is the story of Nick (Jamie Dornan) and Andrea (Jemima Kirke) whose one-night stand evolves into something more, though the exact parameters are blurry and undefined. He is a doctor and author whose heroics in the Middle East gained him international fame. She is a writing prodigy fully consumed with destructive vices, navigating Los Angeles without a driver’s license or credit card and sharing a home with her sister Tara (Lola Kirke). Meanwhile, Tara is dealing with relationship issues of her own as she slowly slips away from her boyfriend Martin (Ben Mendelsohn), who gave up his Australian fame as a rock ‘n’ roll god to be with her. Her way of acting out is to lose herself in religion and seek solace in a charismatic Rabbi (Billy Crystal). This is who they’ve all been so far but do they have the courage to find out who they really are?
